Dark Silence in China

8th -22nd December 2007
Dark Silence has been selected for exhibition in the 2007 Lianzhou International Photography Festival, China. The title for this years festival is 'Alchemy of Shadows' and the curators are Gao Shiming and Duan Yuting.

The ancient Chinese character for 'shadow' contains the ideogram for 'day' and within its graphic transformation of the light of day into dark shadows one can see a miniature illustration of the birth of and interconnectedness between the ancient Chinese philosophical concepts of substance and vacuity, being and nothingness. In Western languages, the term 'shadow' often refers to the unreal, the supernatural, gloom and other negative things. The term alchemy, the medieval school of philosophical and experimental inquiry into the nature of things and forerunner of modern chemistry, is commonly used today in reference to a process through which thing are turned beyond the ordinary. The Alchemy of Shadows will take us back to the 1830s, to the birth of photography when photographers first used
chemicals to develop and preserve images for the renewed amazement of the viewer. In an image-saturated era such as ours, the sense of pure bewilderment before an image, an entire world produced out of the flash convergence of space and time, has been lost.

RCA Secret

16 - 24 November 2007
RCA Secret is an annual contemporary art exhibition consisting of around 2,500 original postcard-sized artworks, made and donated by professional artists, designers and illustrators, plus up-and-coming graduates from the Royal College of Art. The cards are all sold to the public in a huge sale, with every postcard costing just £40, regardless of whether it has been made by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Yoko Ono or a current art student. The lead up to the show saw dedicated buyers camping outside the college three days in advance.

Unfinished Journey Book Launch

September 2006
Spanning six continents, Unfinished Journey documents the travels of 13 artists to a destination of their choice and the works inspired by their visit.  During 2004 I was fortunate to be able to spend almost 3 months overseas for the Unfinished Journey project. I have always had a strong interest in history and this project enabled me to travel and experience some of these histories and stories that intrigue me. I am particularly fascinated by periods of excess and decadence, such as the Baroque, and how people have related to the environments they inhabit. The opportunity to travel to experience these histories lead me to Argentina and Spain. The historical link between the two countries provided an fascinating view of Latin cultures with passion, life and death being prevailing characteristics of the both cultures. Please contact Metro 5 Gallery for more information about the publication.
